I recognize some of what he describes…but again find myself resenting(?) the generalizations…ah, but at least he describes without judging.

>>>They are not about to damn the likes of Gandhi or the Dali Lama to hell simply because they have not embraced Christianity.<<<
Is this a Campolo over-generalization, or is this an accurate portrayal of an ambivalence to Christ’s admittedly narrow claim to be the sole way to the Father?

I am glad that we are not to judge anyone. We are not in a place to ‘damn’ anyone to hell.
Instead of doing that might we point out to others the goodness in Gandhi and the Dali Lama without fear of it threatening our faith or the uniqueness of Christ.

There is a huge difference between condemnation and judging truth. Campolo’s generalization is that many groups of emerging churches will not accept that “good” people who do not accept Christ will suffer eternally. I would hope that we aren’t in that boat (have we ever committed to be an “emerging” church?) We can not judge the heart of men, but I think we do judge between truth and evil and look to help people find truth. Ghandi did many great things, but unless he accepted Christ and the payment He made, if I’m true to my beliefs, I have no choice than to believe he is sadly suffering in Hell.
